About Michigan Society for Medical Research (MISMR)

2008 MISMR Programs & Activities Poster

MISMR Annual Reports

MISMR is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) science educational organization to promote understanding of biomedical research and testing, including the appropriate use of animals.

MISMR was established in 1981 by scientists, physicians and educators. Its mission is to inform the public about biomedical research and testing using animal models. Virtually every advance in modern human and veterinary medicine, including many surgical techniques, can be attributed to the use of animals. It is vital that the procedures and benefits of responsible research be more widely understood to ensure future progress in the prevention, control and cure of disease. Through the financial support and volunteer activities of members, MISMR serves as a resource center and undertakes a variety of outreach efforts involving science education.

The pursuit of science has its origins in the quest for new knowledge. Biomedical research provides fundamental information about living things. It adds to our understanding of how cells and molecules function. Researchers use various research methods, such as tissue cultures, computerized models, and many radioactive isotopes in their investigations. In some cases, there is no substitute for a living system. With the knowledge gained, advances then can be made in the treatment and cure of disease in both humans and animals.

MISMR members strongly support humane animal study in research. We hope that likeminded citizens will join us in working for rational public policy that assures the continued appropriate use of animals in the course of good science.
