KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Ernest D. Prentice, Ph.D.
Dr. Prentice is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at
the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). He is also Professor
of Genetics, Cell Biology and Anatomy, and Professor of Preventive and
Societal Medicine. Dr. Prentice has served as co-chair of the UNMC
Institutional Review Board (IRB) for over 23 years, and served as cochair
of the UNMC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
for 12 years.
Molly Greene
Ms. Greene retired from her position of Director of the Department of
Academic support at The University of Texas Health Science Center at
San Antonio in 2003. A major area of responsibility was the University's
continued compliance and accreditation for the use of animals in
biomedical research and education. In this capacity, Ms. Greene served
as coordinator of the Health Science Center's institutional animal care
program from 1986-2003. Ms. Greene is an advisor on IACUC issues
and provides IACUC training since leaving the Health Science Center.
Kurt Hammel, D.V.M.
Dr. Hammel is a Veterinary Medical Officer with USDA, Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service (APHIS), and Animal Care. He inspects animal
dealers, exhibitors, and research facilities in Michigan for compliance
with the Animal Welfare Act.
Peter R. Kirsten, D.V.M., B.S., B.A.
Dr. Kirsten was a field Veterinary Medical Officer for Indiana prior to
becoming the Supervisory Animal Care Specialist for several states in
the Midwest. He has supervisory responsibility for ten inspectors,
six Veterinary Medical Officers, and four Animal Care Inspectors in
Michigan, Ohio and part of West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee,
and Mississippi.
Paul G. Schofield, M.Ed., B.A.
Detective Schofield is a 33 year veteran of the Michigan State University
Police Department. His professional duties have included uniformed
patrol, Community Police Officer, D.A.R.E. officer, fraud investigator,
defensive tactics instructor, firearms instructor, emergency and pursuit
driving consultant, Highway Traffic Safety adjunct professor, and physical
security and alarm specialist. Detective Schofield received several Life
Saving awards, a Meritorious Service Award, the Lansing Community
College's Community Leadership and Service Award, and the Michigan
State University's Jack Breslin Distinguished Staff Award.
Joseph D. Thulin, D.V.M., M.S., DACLAM
Dr. Thulin is attending Veterinarian and Manager, Veterinary Services
Department, 3M Health Care Business, 3M Company, St. Paul,
Minnesota. Previously directed animal resource units at the University
of Connecticut Health Center, University of Wisconsin Medical School,
and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Thulin is board
certified in laboratory animal medicine and currently serves on the
AAALAC International Council on Accreditation.
Kathryn Wiklanski, M.P.A., B.A.
Ms. Wiklanski is Coordinator of Research Animal Standards and Staff
Development in the Office of the University Committee on the Use and
Care of Animals (UCUCA) at the University of Michigan. Her career
includes research experience in pharmacology/toxicology at a biotech
company in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Axel Wolff, D.V.M., M.S.
Dr. Wolff currently serves as a Senior Assurance Officer in the Division
of Assurances, Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is a Commissioned Officer in the
US Public Health Service and has attained the rank of Captain. Prior to
joining OLAW, he was the director of the Veterinary Resources Program,
NIH's intramural biomedical research support program. Dr. Wolff serves
on the editorial board of Lab Animal.
