SCIENCE EDUCATION AWARD
Vet-A-Visit Program
Represented By: Sarah K. Abood, D.V.M., Ph.D.
On March 31, 2007 the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University celebrated it's annual open house, called Vet-A-Visit, for the 42nd year. This highly successful outreach program engages children and families to respect animals and the importance they play in our lives. Dr. Sarah K. Abood is accepting the award on behalf of the program. She has been the faculty advisor for the past 8 years working closely with a revolving group of dedicated students who commit their time and talents to make sure guests at Vet-A-Visit learn something new, make contact with animals, and enjoy the opportunity to tour the veterinary medical complex. MISMR has been involved with the program for about 15 years, providing displays and educational handouts.
OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
Teresa Jean Fracala
Terry's "day job" at the University of Michigan is in the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) where she started in 1980 and provided secretarial support to the ULAM Director, Bennett Cohen who with members of the Michigan research community, in 1981 established the Michigan Society for Medical Research and was its first president. Howard Rush, director of ULAM, says "he couldn't manage his schedule and correspondence" without Terry's support and "she is an exceedingly important member of the ULAM staff that has provided us with a refreshing degree of stability in a changing environment." She does an even greater service for MISMR with her ongoing and tireless volunteering and her dedication towards promoting the understanding of biomedical research and science education.
