The Awards

The Michigan Society for Medical Research Awards Program was established in 1996 by the Board of Directors to honor and recognize individuals for outstanding research, education, and science advocacy. The purpose of the awards is to recognize those individuals whose activities and attitudes promote the understanding of biomedical research, science education, and public and animal health. The awards are presented on an annual basis to bring to public attention those advocates whose contributions have been especially effective in promoting these goals.

BENNETT J. COHEN EDUCATION LEADERSHIP AWARD

This award is named in memory of the pioneer and visionary in the field of laboratory animal science and medicine who founded and directed the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine at the University of Michigan for twenty-three years. He was instrumental in founding the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science, American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, chaired the National Academy of Science committee that wrote the first edition of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and helped found the American Association for Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International. In 1981 Dr. Bennett J. Cohen, along with members of the Michigan research community, established the Michigan Society for Medical Research and was MISMR's first president.

SCIENCE EDUCATION AWARD

This award was established in 1993 and is given to individuals who have been instrumental in developing, implementing, or contributing to an advocacy program that promotes science and science education. This award acknowledges efforts made to increase this public's appreciation of science, its methods, and the benefits to public and animal welfare.

Nomination & Selection Process

Nominees for the Bennett J. Cohen Education Leadership Award or the Science Education Award should demonstrate through their actions and specific contributions support of the Michigan Society for Medical Research goals and objectives.

All nominations are reviewed by the Awards Selection Committee, which consists of members of the MISMR Board of Directors and other advocates for medical research and science education. In the review of nominations, emphasis will be placed on both:

  • Evidence of a sustained focus on research and education.
  • Effectiveness, duration, and nature of the advocacy activities.

The nomination should be in the form of a narrative which elaborates upon the nominee's primary contribution to medical research/science, and how the candidate's advocacy activities have encompassed the mission of MISMR. Accompanying the narrative should be a CV and photo (jpeg format) of the nominee, along with the enclosed nomination form. Letters from others who know the candidate from a different perspective are welcome.

All nomination materials for the 2008 awards must be postmarked by January 31, 2008 and sent to:

MISMR members strongly support humane animal study in research. We hope that likeminded citizens will join us in working for rational public policy that assures the continued appropriate use of animals in the course of good science.
