A wide range of experimental approaches is used to evaluate the functional consequences of reduced blood flow and oxygen availability. Preventive and therapeutic interventions are pursued as well as basic mechanisms of cell damage. Whole animal studies using either anesthetized or conscious preparations are complemented by in vitro preparations, where appropriate, to test physiologically important hypotheses. Systemic hypoxia, regional ischemia and cardiac arrest/resuscitation models, in mice, rats and dogs are used sequentially and simultaneously to acquire data relevant to the resolution of clinical problems.
