KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Allen W. Cowley, Jr., Ph.D.

Over the past decade a remarkable number of novel technologies have been developed with the goal of understanding the relationships of genes to biological functions and diseases. However, the ultimate application of these powerful new tools that enable determination of gene expression, molecular modification, deletion, addition, or over expression of specific genes has required the increasing utilization of various experimental organisms.

As a result of this work and the importance of these model systems, the animal populations and the facilities required to house and care for them have increased exponentially. An example of one such large scale effort is provided within the Medical College of Wisconsin (The Program of Genomic Applications supported by NHLBI) that is directed at relating genes to cardiovascular function.

In brief, the presentation will show how biomedical research in the post-genomic era has resulted in an even greater dependence upon the development and use of animal model systems.

2007 AWARD RECIPIENTS

BENNETT J. COHEN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

Susan R. Stapleton, Ph.D.
Dr. Susan R. Stapleton, Professor of Chemistry and Biological Sciences at Western Michigan University (WMU), is internationally recognized for her research expertise in the area of understanding the regulation of carbohydrate and fatty acid metabolism, including the relationship to metabolic disorders such as diabetes. As PI of a National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experience for Undergraduates program funded at WMU since 1999, she has opened the doors for others to engage in science learning and research opportunities at WMU. Since 2005, Dr. Stapleton has served as WMU's Director of the NSF-funded Michigan Alliance for Graduate Education Program (AGEP), which promotes the career development of graduate students from under-represented groups in science, technology, mathematics and engineering fields (STEM).

SCIENCE EDUCATION AWARD

Vet-A-Visit Program
Represented By: Sarah K. Abood, D.V.M., Ph.D.
On March 31, 2007 the College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University celebrated it's annual open house, called Vet-A-Visit, for the 42nd year. This highly successful outreach program engages children and families to respect animals and the importance they play in our lives. Dr. Sarah K. Abood is accepting the award on behalf of the program. She has been the faculty advisor for the past 8 years working closely with a revolving group of dedicated students who commit their time and talents to make sure guests at Vet-A-Visit learn something new, make contact with animals, and enjoy the opportunity to tour the veterinary medical complex. MISMR has been involved with the program for about 15 years, providing displays and educational handouts.
