9th Annual Essay Contest—1999

As part of MISMR’s educational efforts the Annual Essay Contest is designed to engage Michigan middle and high school students in gaining greater understanding of the issues associated with biomedical research and testing, and increase awareness and interest in science. This year over 300 essays from students across the state were submitted and judged by a distinguished panel of 30 judges. First place winners were Diane Fayette from Kenowa Hills High School for her essay Benefits of Animal Research, and Claire Gunton from Van Hoosen Middle School for Chemotherapy: The Treasure that Saves Lives.

We were pleased to have the winners and their families in attendance at the MISMR Annual Meeting where each was awarded a $300 savings bond and plaque. A special thanks goes to The DeRoy Testamentary Foundation for their generous grant, enabling MISMR to continue to reach our state’s young people and increase their knowledge about the contributions sound scientific research makes to the quality of our lives.

Speak Out Monitoring the Pulse

Through its members and network of Associations MISMR is constantly monitoring trends and events that have potential impact on the research environment. To keep our membership well informed, briefings are sent out regularly that cover current issues, policies, and legislature focusing on biomedical research. So that our constituents voices may be heard, MISMR annually updates and provides its Speak Out! brochure which shows where and how to communicate effectively with legislators in our state and at the national level. Reaching out to our elected officials in April, MISMR members and supporters convened at the State Capitol in Lansing to meet with our Governor and representatives to continue to establish MISMR as a resource for public policy issues that affect biomedical research, especially research using animals.

Coalition for Public Outreach

The Coalition for Public Outreach is comprised of the National American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), the State Network Organizations for Biomedical Research Education (SNOBRE), and other national biomedical research advocacy and education organizations. All are collaborating to introduce educational programs and materials on the importance of the use of animals in biomedical/biological research, testing, and education to various organizations.

MISMR members strongly support humane animal study in research. We hope that likeminded citizens will join us in working for rational public policy that assures the continued appropriate use of animals in the course of good science.
