Essay Tips
By Jacky Prinz
Ms. Prinz, a teacher at Kenowa
Hills High School, was asked
what her most powerful tools
are in preparing her students
to compose their essays for the
Annual MISMR Essay Contest.
She shared the following tips:
- Past winners talk to the
classes about their approach.
- Students are required to
write this paper before they
can dissect their cats so they
will work on their cats with a
conscience and an ethical
reason and purpose.
- I have the students focus
on how this has personally
helped a family member.
- I require at least one
source be a personal interview.
- Our media center and
English departments are
notified about this project.
- I always tell students
about how past winners have
benefited by winning and
how it has opened up doors
of opportunity to them. I then
give them specific examples of
the influential people they've
meet and the universities that
have made special allowances
towards them.
- I also tell them the great
honor it is to be PUBLISHED.
Several of Ms. Prinz's students
have been awarded first place
in the Annual MISMR Essay
Contest, with many others
receiving honorable mentions.
Deadline for 2003 MISMR Annual Essay
Contest entries is December 19, 2002.
